All In is the eleventh episode of Season 7 of Homeland. It aired on April 22, 2018.
Synopsis[]
Saul Berenson gets the green light for his mission in Russia. Time is running out to save Elizabeth Keane's presidency.
Episode guide[]
Saul, Carrie and their team land in Moscow and are being watched by Russian intelligence and Yevgeny Gromov. Meanwhile, Sam Paley is in prison visiting Dar Adal, whom he explains about the new events surrounding Keane and Saul. Paley hopes for information about Saul's intentions in Moscow. In return, Dar Adal would benefit from a new administration. Dar explains that Saul is certainly not in Russia with Carrie and her team for diplomatic purposes. The CIA doesn't really know. He assumes that Saul has his own small team and advises Paley to look to Russia experts to find out who belongs.
Carrie, Saul and the rest of the team arrive at the hotel and they settle in. They look at pictures of Yevgeny in his property and discuss what security measures are in place there and how they want to proceed since they suspect Simone is there.
Clint is visited by Janet, who confronts him about the fact that he works for Saul and that they know about the mission in Moscow. She now wants to know from Clint exactly what they are planning to do there. He claims that all he knows is that they want to talk to the Russians there. Janet explains that if he doesn't tell her what Saul really wants there, he could go to prison for supporting a conspiracy. Clint hesitates, but then explains that they are there because of Simone Martin. Janet is surprised that she is still alive.
Saul and Carrie have their official meeting with the Russian delegation - representatives from the SVR (state intelligence agency) and the GRU (military intelligence agency). But Yevgeny is not there. Saul is therefore not satisfied and does not want to continue without him. Yevgeny gets a phone call and is persuaded to leave his house and come to them. When Saul is told this, they explain that they will wait for Yevgeny and take a break until then. Carrie goes to the team during this break and explains that we're good to go.
Janet is traveling with Paley and they ponder what it means that Simone is still alive. Paley can't believe Keane was actually right and only used by the Russians. His career will be over if Simone Martin confirms that. Janet says he can talk to the Russian ambassador and make sure that Saul's mission fails and Simone doesn't return to the US. Ultimately, it is still best for the country if Keane is no longer president. Assuming that Paley would choose to speak to the Ambassador, Janet made an appointment to meet him straight away. However, Paley is reluctant to speak to him, so Janet does it herself.
Yevgeny has arrived at the hotel and Saul presents several issues that need clarification, such as the deaths of General McClendon and Dante Allen. Yevgeny takes the floor and explains that Americans should not present themselves as victims. After all, they have acted aggressively against the Russians for decades and repeatedly triggered wars in Europe and the Middle East. Meanwhile, Saul's team approaches Yevgeny's mansion by boat. Carrie meanwhile replies to Yevgeny that it is not about the last 40 years, but about the current allegations and that she herself was abused and deceived. Suddenly there is a murmur in the Russian delegation and they request a break. Meanwhile, Saul and Carrie's team arrive at Yevgeny's house, where they finally find Simone, but it's an ambush and gunfire ensues. The team has to flee and loses a man. When Carrie finds out about this, she is furious. On the way back to the conference room, she meets a satisfied Yevgeny.
Keane learns from Wellington that her impeachment trial ended 4-5 against her. A moment later, Vice President Warner walks in. Keane complains that the institution is being betrayed because the 25th Amendment is intended for when the president is in a coma or disabled, but none of that applies to her. Warner doesn't react at all, only explaining that he's here to officially tell her that she's being impeached.
Saul and the team discuss what went wrong on the mission. They're sure they should have been warned, but that doesn't matter to Saul now. He assumes that Simone is now being guarded even better and that one has absolutely no idea where she could be. He considers the mission a failure.
Carrie says she realized at the meeting that the Russian side doesn't agree, General Yakushin could be a target, so they don't have to find Simone themselves, but are led to them. She consults this with Sandy and Max, after which Sandy considers freezing Yakushin's finances so he can help them find Simone.
Carrie informs Saul of her plan. He has reservations, mainly because it is not clear to him how Simone will then be able to get to the USA. Carrie says that's not the primary goal. It's all about getting her and Carrie didn't get back on board and fly to Moscow and then not try everything. She speaks to Saul's conscience.
Yakushin meets with Saul the next day because his money was frozen. Saul explains that he wants Simone and that he knows Yevgeny has her. Yakushin claims there is nothing he can do, but Saul refuses to be discussed, threatening to take further action that the Russians will not like. Yakushin walks away angrily and is monitored by Max and Co. Meanwhile, the meeting continues and Carrie apologizes because she wants to continue the mission. Saul learns that after yesterday's meeting, Yevgeny was also upset and no longer attends and Yakushin had to go. Saul is asked if he still has authority to speak to them after Keane was deposed.
Max and Sandy follow Yakushin as he arrives at his headquarters. Clint arrives and is informed of everything that has happened. Then they see on the monitors that Yakushin is apparently looking for Simone with numerous armed men. They track the wagons and find that Yakushkin apparently thinks Simone is with Mirov at his very well-protected headquarters. Once there, fire is opened and the building cleared. When Mirov hears about the riots, he ends the meeting with Saul and calls Yevgeny, who tells him what is happening and that Yakushin is behind it. He goes to Simone in the suite and tells her to hide. Nobody should be allowed in. He will come back and get her. But now he must go and take care of the uprising.
Taking advantage of the riots, Carrie and her team invade Mirov's building themselves. Max comes up with the idea that the riots should also be posted online. Clint should use Yevgeny's network with the bots. Meanwhile, Carrie takes a moment to grab a key card. Then she advances further into the building.
Sam Paley rushes to Warner and shows him what's going on in Moscow on TV. Keane and Saul are responsible and Warner has to say that Saul is acting on his own because Paley has already heard harsh words from the Russian ambassador.
Carrie can't get through to the suite, so she contacts Max. He explains to her how she can get to the suite by other means. To do this, Carrie has to climb the outside wall of the building to the suite's balcony. Despite the wind, she makes it and breaks into the suite. There, however, Carrie is surprised by Simone, who threatens Carrie with a gun. Carrie tries to convince Simone that she can't count on Yevgeny and she gets dumped. That has also happened to Dante, Clayton and Krupin. The Russians always leave everyone behind when they make a problem. You can't rely on Yevgeny either.
Yevgeny arrives at the suite and asks Simone to open the door. He organized an "escape route". But there is no answer, so he breaks into the suite and finds that Simone has disappeared. He goes to the balcony and sees Simone getting into a gray Mercedes downstairs. He demands that he be pursued. Carrie is in the Mercedes dressed as Simone with Thomas Anson. Meanwhile, Simone with a blond wig has gotten into another car with Carter Bennet and they drive off unnoticed.
Trivia[]
You got me going down a rabbit hole, though, and I found this nifty little article: KGB AFTER THE BREAK UP OF SOVIET UNION | Facts and Details
Mistakes[]
Factual error: Filming location is Budapest instead of Moscow, you see HU license plates on cars, HU street name tags, and even the flag of HU and the EU waving over the building Carrie is on.
Quotes[]
- That is the deal we make, in the work we do - Carrie clarifying to Simone that Yevgeny is going to sacrifice her.
- First time landing in Moscow, Gromov watching Mathison on the monitor and Mirov calling her ‘Your useful idiot’. He replied: ‘She is not an idiot’.
- What's the old Soviet saying?
- "We pretend to work, you pretend to pay us"?
- “How am I supposed to know? I’ve been here, walking around in circles for the past 6 months.” - Dar Adal
- “I am not all over the place now. I’m here, and I am all in. And I need you to say yes.” - Carrie
- Five to four. Against. The Supreme Court just announced it.
- How is that possible? The Solicitor General sat right there two days ago and assured me that the Cabinet serves at my discretion. I can fire them as I wish.
- Apparently, the court had issues with the... - delivery.
- - What delivery?
- Of the notice of termination to the Cabinet members.
- They're not gonna stop, these people lined up against me.
- I think we should focus on more hopeful terrain.
- - Like what?
- - The vote in Congress, for one.
- Two-thirds is a very high bar.
- And Saul in Moscow.
- They'll probably get to him, too.
- Not wasting any time.
- So you heardvthe Court's decision.
- Yeah. Delivery issues with the pink slips.
- Not enough stamps, I guess.
- This is a moment that was never meant to happen.
- You know that, right?
- A moment utterly not contemplated in the Constitution. Everyone keeps waiting around like they actually care what it says.
- I do care what the Constitution says.
- Good. Then explain to me how you used the 25th Amendment to oust a President who is not in a coma, not in any way disabled, clearly in possession of her faculties, clearly able to discharge the duties of her office. How is that done?
- Madam President, I am here to relieve you of your command.
