Beirut is Back is the second episode of Season 2 of Homeland.  It aired on October 7, 2012.

Synopsis[]

Fatima Ali reveals important information to Carrie Mathison regarding Abu Nazir, but the CIA has doubts about the informant's credibility. There is then a showdown in Beirut, which means that Nicholas Brody has to take a clear position.

Episode guide[]

In Beirut, Carrie meets Fatima Ali at the mosque after her morning prayers. Fatima hints that she knows something about Abu Nazir, but first wants assurance that the CIA will give her money as a reward and that she will also be flown to the USA. After Carrie promises her five million dollars, Fatima reveals that Abu Nazir is meeting her husband, Abbas Ali, the Hezbollah district commander in Beirut the next day and that the CIA can kill them both.

Walden informs Brody that the attacks on the nuclear facilities were only partially successful and the current President of the United States refuses to support Israel, even though he has the necessary resources to do so. Walden is therefore hoping for Brody's support. Meanwhile, Jess is approached by Walden's wife Cynthia, who suggests that they organize a fundraiser for the veterans together. Jess agrees, although Brody is less enthusiastic.

When Carrie shows up at Saul's, he is relieved and asks his colleagues to call off the search for Carrie. She immediately tells him about her meeting with Fatima, which Saul is not at all happy about, as he should have been at the meeting to assess Fatima's credibility. Carrie then tells him about the planned meeting with Abu Nazir. Later, Saul and Carrie video conference with Estes to tell him the news. When Estes learns that Carrie met Fatima alone, Estes begins to doubt whether Fatima was telling the truth.

Jess drives with Dana to the Waldens' house to meet with Cynthia. While Dana is sent to the library to do her homework, Cynthia tells Jess that they have decided to have Brody give a speech at the fundraising gala. Meanwhile, Dana meets Finn, the vice president's son, whom she already knows from school. Meanwhile, Estes is on the phone with Saul and asks him to make a decision about Fatima's credibility. Carrie overhears the conversation and then goes out for some fresh air. When Saul arrives, Carrie explains to him that being wrong about Brody broke her and she hasn't been able to trust herself ever since.

Mike pays Brody a visit in his office. He tells him that Tom Walker was the best shot of them all and still missed the vice president. Mike is sure there's more to it than that, so he tells Brody to look for information that goes beyond the official report. Although Brody doesn't think much of Mike's theory, he promises to make some calls.

Meanwhile, everything was being prepared for the meeting in Beirut. After Abu Nazir and Fatima's husband are either captured or killed for the JSOC team, Saul and Carrie are supposed to pick up Fatima, whereupon the three will immediately fly back to America. The CIA employees observe what is happening in Beirut via numerous monitors and Saul and Carrie also observe what is happening via their laptop. Carrie asks Saul why he never contacted her. Saul replies that her doctor thought it would be better this way because Saul reminds her of her work at the CIA. Meanwhile, Brody was invited by Walden to watch the events in Beirut live with some other MPs. The street is currently being cleared there. When Brody realizes what's going on, he sends a warning text message.

As Abu Nazir gets out of his car, one of the shooters in Beirut receives the order to shoot, but Abu Nazir is warned just in time and taken out of the line of fire. Carrie and Saul are then asked by Rudy to get in the car immediately to pick up Fatima. In the car, Carrie learns that two of Abu Nazir's people, including Abbas Ali, died, but he was able to escape. When they arrive at Fatima's apartment, Carrie storms out of the car and goes into the apartment to look for more information about Abu Nazir. After putting some files in her bag, she tries to go back to the car, but some locals with guns chase her. Carrie eventually manages to take out one of them and escape from the rest. Rudy then takes her into the car.

That evening, Roya meets with Brody to tell him that Abu Nazir is grateful to him. Brody is upset that he had to send a message while surrounded by deputies, but Roya makes it clear to him that he is currently playing an important role for Abu Nazir. Brody then meets with Mike and some of his other former colleagues. Among them is Lauder, who has a very negative attitude towards Brody and immediately accuses him of not having enough interest in Walker's death.

When Brody gets home, he meets Dana, who tells him about the speech at the fundraising gala and gives him advice not to disappoint Jess. Then she tells him that she misjudged Finn Walden. The next morning Carrie is driven home. Meanwhile, Rudy and Saul are working with the documents Carrie stole from Fatima's apartment, but they can't find anything useful. When Rudy has already disappeared, Saul finds a memory card in his pocket that contains Brody's video.
