Synopsis[]
Carrie Mathison has to make a decision: does she want to be a good mother for Franny or do she want to continue her job. Meanwhile, Elizabeth Keane finds herself cornered and hopes to have an ally in Vice President Ralph Warner. Meanwhile, Saul Berenson has an idea how to track down Yevgeny Gromov.
Episode guide[]
Carrie is on a stretcher being pushed into a room. The doctor informs her about the treatment and Carrie is hooked up to a monitor. She is given an anesthetic and then given electrical pulses.
Vice President Warner gets ready to meet Wellington, whom he keeps waiting. When he comes into the office, he starts with small talk about the house. Then they get to the point. Wellington explains that Paley wants to declare the government incompetent under the 25th Amendment. Some have already signed and only four are missing to get the majority. But Warner also has to sign the final. Warner explains that he does not know who signed there. He is also surprised that Paley is not cooperating after all. Wellington explains that Dante's death made him work against Keane again. Warner explains that he is on Keane's side.
Saul is with Sandy, who has been dealing with the fact that before and after Dante's death, two Russian private planes took off nearby and belong to the same network. Sandy suspects that Simone is still alive and has a relationship with Yevgeny. She did some research and found out that they met in Paris eleven years ago.
Carrie gets a visit from her attorney, Rhonda. She tells her that Carrie could see her daughter once a month. She should transfer custody to her sister without a hearing. Then it would be an agreement between the two parties. But Carrie wants a chance at a hearing and doesn't want to give up on Franny without a fight. However, Rhonda recommends that she accept Maggie's offer because she no longer has the right to see her daughter if she is likely to lose her after a hearing that will also take a lot of strength.
Keane summoned her cabinet and declared that the country was under attack and Paley was now part of the attack. The opponent is trying to endanger democracy and weaken the USA. Anyone who doesn't believe her should think about what they did in the first 100 days of government. We have to stand together now more than ever. Then the press is let in.
Carrie talks to Thomas Anson about her situation and he says that her sister must have a weak spot too. Carrie thinks about it and reveals that her sister had been treating her unofficially for a long time so that the CIA wouldn't find out. Anson says it could get her licensed as a doctor.
Saul has a conference call with Jim, to which he says he's not at all happy that Yevgeny hasn't been found yet. Jim admits they're having issues with Keane, so finding Yevgeny isn't a top priority. Saul makes it clear that without evidence against the Russians, Keane may not make it to the end of the year as President. It is to send a team to Sergiyev Posad, because this place was often mentioned in Yevgeny's script for a novel from his student days. You should also keep an eye out for Simone Martin once the team is there.
Carrie is making bullet points for the hearing when Saul comes to see her. She explains to him about her treatment and Saul then wants to know what happened to Carrie. She explains that she has lost control and that it is her own fault. Saul feels responsible, but Carrie makes it clear that he couldn't have helped her. You bring up the custody battle. But Saul couldn't help her. Carrie now asks what Saul wants from her. He explains the current situation to her, that Yevgeny has escaped and maybe Simone is still alive. You have to look for her in Russia and for that he needs Carrie's team. She thinks they'll be happy to do it. As they debate whether Anson or Bennet should take the lead, Saul suggests that Carrie should. But Carrie makes it clear that she really can't take part. She had to leave the job to keep Franny. Saul says she's tried before to no avail. Carrie is convinced it will work this time.
The VP meets with Mullan at a restaurant, who, to his surprise, has invited Paley as well. The vice president is angry and wants to leave. But Paley explains that it all makes no sense. All people who are important were actually in state custody. It is extremely strange that Russian agents could always intervene here. He is convinced that the President has her fingers in everything.
Wellington explains to Keane that Paley apparently set up a meeting with Warner through Mullan, which he knew from a local bartender. Since this meeting has now lasted more than an hour, this cannot bode well. Keane calls the vice president and says on tape that she knows where he is with whom and that he should call her right away. Wellington believes he will keep his word from the morning, but Keane doubts that.
Anson is in Maggie's office looking for the file Carrie was treated under. But he can't find anything and calls Carrie. She thinks about it and comes to the conclusion that Maggie must have the file at home. She explains to Anson how he can get the file there.
It's a new day and Keane wants to fire those in her cabinet who may be working against her, as Warner has still not responded to her messages. Wellington explains that she can't do that because it would only play into the hands of all her opponents. The Russians in particular would achieve what they have been trying to do for months. Besides, she didn't even know who was against her. But Keane didn't know what else to do either. You didn't fight for office long enough to just pack up now. She sticks with it.
Carrie comes to the hearing and Anson hands her the files he was able to snatch from the house with no problem. The hearing will take place shortly thereafter. Josie is questioned, who says that Carrie can't be counted on because she always has to leave suddenly. But she also admits that Carrie seems to have an important job. Franny herself has been crying lately when she's trying to fall asleep. Then Christine Lonas is questioned, who talks about the situation with Quinn and finally explains that she always finds it negative when a mother loses custody, but that one has no choice when it is clear that the child is being traumatized by the mother. The next witness is Franny's psychologist, who gives her assessment from conversations with Franny. She explains that Franny trembles when she talks about what happened in Dante's apartment.
Then Maggie is questioned, who reports on everyday life with Franny and Carrie. Maggie says Carrie took her daughter to Dante to investigate, even though she knew he was a bad guy. She also has more reasons why she wants custody of Franny. Maggie then wants to read a closing statement, but she decides to speak directly to Carrie. She explains that she only wants the best for Franny. Carrie was always very stubborn as a child and she was always the brave one. Maggie, on the other hand, was anxious and resentful that Carrie was always the brave one. She's not exceptional and doesn't have a job like Carrie. She's not a hero and doesn't need to risk her life. But Maggie's life offers a family, a stable home. Everything Carrie couldn't offer. Carrie interrupts and explains that she now understands that too and therefore wants to quit her job. Maggie replies that she can't believe Carrie. The treatment will be over in a few weeks, then Saul calls and everything starts all over again. The judge calls a 15 minute break during which Carrie will not leave the room to think. She looks at the files, takes them, walks over to Maggie and takes her sister aside. Carrie asks if Maggie still offers to let her see Franny on the weekends if she voluntarily gives them custody. Maggie even agrees that she can come every weekend. Carrie wants to do this and asks Maggie to do it quickly before changing her mind again.
Keane sees on television that the amendment to the Constitution is apparently acting against her much more quickly than expected. Wellington walks in and explains that the vice president wants to see her. Keane lets him in and confronts him head-on about his betrayal. But he explains that he just needed time to think and after much deliberation after meeting Paley, he decided to stand by her. However, she must reverse the resignations of cabinet members because doing so violates all the principles he stands for. She abuses her power and this line should not be crossed. Keane asks how she can be sure that if she reverses the resignations, he won't be against her after all, because then he would have the necessary majority and could become president himself. Warner says she has to trust him. Keane can't do that and says that he doesn't have a majority because of the layoffs, so she's sticking to her opinion. Warner says there could be a legal battle if she just fires that many people. Keane remains stubborn because her legal department interprets it differently. Warner says he then has no choice but to actually use the 25th Amendment against them.
Carrie meets up with Saul after Dante's funeral and explains to him what happened to the custody battle. Carrie explains that her sister and Bill now have custody, but she can handle it. It's better that way. Saul then explains to her that the 25th Amendment is to be exercised against Keane, but that she has already fired four members of the cabinet and is now checking whether this was legal. Saul explains that they will now look for Simone and Yevgeny in Russia and that a team will be sent out in the evening. Carrie asks if the offer still stands that she's in. Saul says if she's ready in four hours he'll be happy to take her with him. Carrie just wanted to talk to Dante's parents for a moment and then she could go.
Afterwards, Carrie arrives at Maggie's and talks to Franny. She explains that Maggie always looked after her when she had to go away. This is now the case again. Franny asks where she's going and Carrie explains that she's going back to Europe, where Franny has been before. But she can't remember and then wants to know if she'll be coming back. Carrie replies that of course she will come back, that she will always come back. Franny and Maggie explain that they will take a picture every day and that Carrie can always look at what happened while she was away. Carrie thinks this is a wonderful idea and gives her daughter a long hug, trying to hold back tears. Carrie then thanks Maggie, grabs her things and sets off. She gets into the car waiting for her in front of the door, sits in the back next to Saul and they drive off.
