The Department of Defense (DoD, USDOD, or DOD) is an executive branch department of the federal government of the United States charged with coordinating and supervising all agencies and functions of the government concerned directly with national security and the United States Armed Forces. It is headquartered at the Pentagon in Arlington, Virginia, just outside of Washington, D.C.

The DOD the biggest federal department Because it control The Army, The Navy, the Air Force, The Marines, the Army reserves, the Army National Guard, The Navy reserves, The Navy National Guard, The Air Forces Reserve, The Air Force National Guard, the Marines Reserve, the Marines National Guard, The U S Coast Guard, U S Coast Guard reserves, the Navy Academy, The Army Academy, The Air Force Academy, The Joint Chief as well as the Veteran Administration, not counting the Newly space force and Black op program as well as many other classified government Agencies, including research and development.

When it come to defend this country is very well protected and run separate from Partisan politics. Meaning you think this Country is weak thing again. The America Defense department can work as one entity any where in the world at a moment notice.

Department of the Navy (US Navy and US Marine Corps) (the Coast Guard can be placed under the DoN in wartime, but that has not happened since WWII, and likely will not be again for a number of reasons)
