Jonas Hollander is a lawyer working for the Düring Foundation in Berlin and quickly became friends with Carrie Mathison, with whom he has a relationship. He himself has two children whom he sees every other weekend. He also takes good care of Carrie's daughter Franny, especially when Carrie is unavailable. He's really in love and would do anything for her. He already knows Carrie pretty well because he did the background check for Otto Düring before Carrie was hired. When Laura Sutton was arrested by the BND, he was the one who used his skills as a lawyer to ensure that Laura was released and made it clear that the relationship would have consequences.
Biography[]
When Carrie returns from the refugee camp in Lebanon and thinks someone is after her, he supports her in her decisions. She tells him all about her illness and how she will become without the pills. Although Jonas would have wished that she had spoken to him before she decided to stop taking the pills, he agrees in principle with her approach and drives her to a remote country house, from where they investigate and are not found for the time being be able. Jonas learns a lot more about Carrie's past, including a list of the numerous victims of drone operations under Carrie's leadership. He can't understand how Carrie can live with herself with these numbers and has to go outside first. The next morning, as agreed, Jonas wants to give Carrie her meds again because Carrie has a clue who's after her. When she refuses, Jonas threatens to call an ambulance and reveal her whereabouts, to which he is successful. Shortly thereafter, however, Jonas gets a call from his ex-wife, who tells them that their son Stefan has been arrested for theft. He immediately calls a friend at the police station who cannot confirm this. Carrie realizes this was just a ploy to find her, but Jonas is shocked that she's not considering his son. Carrie leaves the house in a panic and Jonas briefly searches for her, but then drives off to search for his son, who was not arrested by the police but kidnapped by Peter Quinn.
Jonas is still very worried afterwards, but hasn't heard from Carrie. He even drove back to the house, but found nothing there. So he gets back to his work and discusses contact with a hacker with Laura. He doesn't really want to drag her into Laura's campaign because she's grounded, but Otto says they should do anything that would help Laura get more documents. So he gives Laura to the hacker.
When Carrie takes Quinn seriously injured to his shelter, all she knows is to ask Jonas for help, who comes willingly and even brings medicine that he was able to get from his sister. He would like to help Carrie, but is also anything but happy that everything is always supposed to be secret and that she always has the mission in mind. Carrie leaves Jonas with Quinn and he tries to take care of him, but is then forced to take him to the hospital. When he got Carrie's permission, however, Quinn fled. Jonas looks for him everywhere and then, hours later, when Carrie is finally back, he has to be told that he made a mistake. Jonas is really angry and declares that he doesn't want anything more to do with it and leaves once and for all because Carrie can't let go again.
A few days later, Jonas visits Otto because he wants to learn more about Carrie from her. Otto says he's really worried and should never have hired Carrie because she wasn't mentally stable. But he doesn't hear more from Carrie.
Meanwhile, Jonas is in contact with Laura about Faisal Marwan, who was wrongly imprisoned. He defends him at his court proceedings and first of all allows himself to be told everything. But when Faisal talks about a potential attack, he and Laura quarrel. Jonas wants to report this to the police, Laura is against it to protect Marwan because his personal rights would be trampled on again. They finally let Otto decide, with whom Jonas is more successful with his arguments. He is then present at the handover and would like to remain present during the interrogation, but the BND simply snatches Marwan out of his hands and almost kidnaps him. Jonas no longer has a chance to get to Marwan.
While Laura is raging in public about how Marwan was treated, Jonas finds Carrie in his apartment, wakes her up and explains that the terrorists from the main station have been caught. Jonas is happy that she is fine and since Carrie is also very emotional, they quickly kiss and spend the night together. While playing cards, they talk about their assignment at the main train station and Jonas is a little proud of Carrie, but also feels confirmed that they can't stay together. Jonas can't just forget the events of the past week and doesn't want to keep living in danger and knowing his children are safe. He says Carrie can't assure him that. With heavy hearts he makes it clear that they have no future and they break up because Carrie is deeply disappointed that she opened up so much to Jonas and that this has now been her undoing.
Comments[]
Alex Gansa specifically said re: Jonas: She’s attracted to him because of the work that he does… but I think she’s attracted to him for a larger reason that he is not Nick Brody…
“Back at the cabin she details to JoBrody the warning signs that she’s gone too far off the deep end: incoherence, talking too fast, and belligerence. He’s all like, ‘Yup. No prob. I got this,’ but the next thing we know Carrie, who has snorted a bunch of caffeine, is sitting cross-legged at the center of a circle of headshots like a GD poltergeist. But, whatever, he’s got this.” — Justine Harman
Note[]
One of the constants of Carrie's relationships over the past eight seasons has been her difficulty in making herself vulnerable to people for fear of being rejected/judged in some way. It was the underlying emotion behind “come on, you know my shit” / “you know mine” and one of the main reasons her relationship with Jonas failed.
