New Normal is the tenth episode of Season 5 of Homeland. It aired on December 6, 2015.
Synopsis[]
Dar Adal and Saul Berenson have differing views on how to proceed with Allison Carr, but when a threatening IS video announcing a terrorist attack in a major European city is released, they roll over the events.
Episode guide[]
A man arrives at the main train station in Berlin and hands his suitcase to a man disguised as a construction worker in the elevator. Meanwhile, Carrie, Saul and Dar Adal discuss Allison's testimony. Carrie thinks she's lying and makes sense, but Dar believes Allison. He sends Carrie out and asks why Saul is so reticent. At least Ivan has confirmed his story so that he and the Israeli ambassador are no longer under suspicion. But Saul can't really be happy about that.
Carrie talks to Astrid, who doesn't believe Allison's story either. They turn to Quinn, whom Carrie has been missing for nine days. But she hasn't heard from emergency rooms or morgues. He just disappeared despite his injury. Astrid uses surveillance cameras to try to find out where he might be.
Bibi, Qasim and the others watch Quinn suffer and always try to position the camera in such a way that Bibi has maximum success with it when he sends out his warning to the population.
Saul questions Allison to see the story for himself. She has answers to all his questions, but Saul doesn't really want to believe her and mainly accuses her of wanting to have Carrie killed. He becomes increasingly angry and eventually attacks Allison. Saul is brought out and a doctor called for Allison.
Otto and Jonas clarify business matters. Among other things, Jonas has a list of possible successors for Carrie's position with him. Laura walks in and explains that a former prisoner from Plötzensee prison, Faisal Marwan, has arrived and wants to make a statement. They want to sue the government. The man owned an electronics store and sold cell phones. Some of the cell phones sold were used to make calls to Syria, which is why he was suspected of being a terrorist and imprisoned with no real trial. Otto's foundation will protect him and bear the costs. You talk to him shortly afterwards. Faisal explains that he feels betrayed by Germany because he integrated and was then betrayed. They encourage him and explain that they will probably win their case, but also explain that he could also be questioned and cornered by the other side. Faisal is nervous, but understands that the only way to help him is to tell everything he knows. Jonas asks him about Hajik Zayd, who bought several phones and sat with him in Plötzensee. Faisal talks about what he heard in prison, including vaguely about an attack in Berlin, about which he doesn't have anything specific to say even when asked. He's afraid that this isn't good for him now, but Laura and Jonas calm him down. Laura finally takes Faisal to the door. When he's gone, Jonas says they have to report a possible attack in Berlin, but Laura doesn't want to betray Faisal. Since Otto is in Munich at the moment, they want to ask him for advice the next day.
Carrie is looking for a lead on Quinn when Astrid texts her to find a TV. In a bar she sees on television that someone is threatening an attack if the UN Security Council does not recognize the Islamic State. Then she recognizes Quinn, on whom the effects of the poison gas are shown. Shocked, Carrie stumbles outside.
Dar Adal and Saul discuss the terrorists' video and then explain to the BND that the test subject, Quinn, is one of them and Dar tells Dar that Quinn was following a lead that may allow them to find out who planned the attack. Allison summons Dar Adal shortly after because she has heard of the possible nerve gas attack. She explains that Ivan might know something about it, at least how much gas the group might actually own. They immediately go to Ivan, who, at a sign from Allison, explains what he knows. A possible attack could be devastating. Allison asks Dar what about her now, and he replies that it hasn't been decided yet. Allison explains that she would like to help because that is her field.
The Syrian group around Bibi is discussing the mission for the coming day because a barrel of the gas has been dumped. Qasim shows some discomfort and expresses his doubts to Bibi. But Bibi is convinced that her actions will bring long-term success and that the opponents themselves are to blame for the victims.
Carrie meets up with Saul and Astrid to find out more about the events. Carrie wants to see the entire video that Quinn is showing because she thinks she can spot a sign of Quinn. She sets off with Astrid and they watch the video at the BND headquarters. Carrie finds it very difficult to watch and bursts into tears. She tries to calm down and then watch the video again.
Saul and Dar Adal discuss with Joe, who has a direct line to the President, how to proceed and what the goals of the threat are. Possibly IS just wants another war to be waged in the Middle East. They get the information that they cannot be given any more time, but that no warning is issued for Berlin either, because they do not want to let the IS win by triggering mass panic after every threat. Allison comes in after the call and explains that they have a suspect in Bibi Hamed.
Laura and Jonas discuss with Otto how to proceed with Faisal. Laura makes it clear that the situation has not improved in recent years with the previous strategy, but rather has gotten worse, which is why she considers it necessary not to simply extradite Faisal. She first brought Faisal to the foundation so that he would be safe. Otto finally calls Saul and asks for assurances that she will not arrest a man with possible information about the attack. Saul gives Otto his word.
Utku informs Bibi that Quinn is still alive because someone injected him with the antidote. He wants to be clear about this before the operation and get to the bottom of the matter quickly. You can just leave the American behind.
Astrid explains that Carrie shouldn't blame herself because Quinn never did anything he didn't want to do. A staff member explains that they found a trail via a tile on the ground, but 1500 buildings are possible. They check this with various data from Bibi and his whereabouts, so that there are only 39 places to visit.
Bibi called everyone together because he wants to know who betrayed the group. He searches all backpacks to see who is out of antidote. He finds one with Qasim, but not with his neighbor Zahir. He swears it wasn't him, but can't convince Bibi, who kills him.
Jonas wants to go to the CIA with Faisal Marwan so that he can make his statement when the BND suddenly pulls up and takes Faisal with them. Jonas and Otto's objections are not even listened to and Laura is served because she already suspected that a promise was worth nothing.
Allison talks to her bodyguard, Conrad, about the comfort of being under constant surveillance. Conrad explains that he doesn't believe what is being said about her. On the other side of the street, a woman walks along with a dog, who keeps looking over.
Astrid and Carrie have visited one of the possible locations of Bibi's group and find a bloodstain there. They also spot a lead and eventually discover the corpse of Zahir. Carrie continues to search the location and finally finds Quinn lying lifeless on the floor in the gas chamber, but then moves his finger. Astrid immediately calls for help and both Carrie and Astrid are very relieved.
Bibi and his people are on their way to their mission. Qasim is sitting in the front of the car with Bibi. He wants him to tell him what's on his mind. He had swapped the syringes because Qasim was part of the family and he didn't want to kill him in front of the group. But if he acts on his own again, it was his last act.
Carrie sits in the hospital with Quinn, who is still unconscious. Saul sits down next to her without a word.
