Rupert Friend is an English actor who portrayed Peter Quinn on Homeland.

Biography[]

Rupert Friend was born on October 1st, 1981 in Oxfordshire, England. It never occurred to him at a young age that he should try his luck in acting, because he only became interested in the art after he had finished school. He applied to the Webber Douglas Academy of Dramatic Art in London and, to his surprise, was accepted despite having had no previous experience.

Rupert Friend made his film debut in 2004 opposite Johnny Depp in The Libertine, for which he immediately won the Satellite Awards for Best Newcomer. Important roles in "Pride & Prejudice" and "Young Victoria" followed. But Rupert Friend also tries his hand at being a screenwriter and director behind the camera. In 2008 he co-wrote the short film The Continuing and Lamentable Saga of the Suicide Brothers with fellow college student Tom Mison, and in 2010 he wrote, produced and directed another short film called Steve.

In 2012, Rupert Friend was discovered by a wider audience in the United States when he joined the cast of the hit Showtime series "Homeland" in the second season. He embodies the mysterious CIA agent Peter Quinn. The role earned him a nomination for Best Guest Actor at the 2013 Emmy Awards.

Privately, Rupert Friend was in a relationship with his fellow actress Keira Knightley for five years, they had met while filming "Pride & Prejudice". In 2010, the couple then separated amicably. He has been married to actress Aimee Mullins since 2016.

The British actor talks about Quinn and Carrie in the new season, why he doesn't do rom-coms, and his menacing shaved head - By Emily Zemler

"It was very grueling. I was determined not to cut any corners and serve this man. I hope in some way to draw some attention to an underserved demographic in the real world and in the stories of television. The actuality of a returning veteran. The actuality of chemical warfare and its aftermath. The actuality of PTSD which has only recently been acknowledged by the army as a condition. We send people away and they come back and they’re put to pasture. They’re 21, some of these boys and girls. They’re done in the eyes of society and that’s incredibly unfair. I’ve had a lot of response from people who work with veterans, all of whom are overjoyed that it’s being talked about and not in a sentimental or patronizing way. That was an important thing for me. The idea that Quinn had integrity and pride and dignity." - By Debra Birnbaum
