Sock Puppets is the ninth episode of Season 6 of Homeland. It aired on March 19, 2017.

Synopsis[]

Carrie Mathison tries to gain some distance. Meanwhile, Elizabeth Keane comes up with a new plan and Max goes undercover.

Episode guide[]

Carrie talks to a psychologist about her complicated relationship with Brody and how it's affected Franny. She also admits she wasn't sure at first if Franny was even going to be born. Her daughter has long reminded her of Brody's death and Carrie's role in it. She then turns to Quinn, with whom she also had an intense relationship, albeit in a different way than Brody. She explains that she brought him home so she wouldn't lose him too. The psychologist replies that Carrie faces the challenge every parent faces, which is balancing her own needs with those of her child.

Meanwhile, Dar Adal has a chat with Keane about relations with Iran. She recounts Majid Javadi's admission that Iran was violating the nuclear deal and then asking Saul to return to Langley. Now she wants to develop a disaster plan together with Dar. He warns you not to pay attention to the image you give to the outside world. She asks him to name her people who should be involved in the disaster plan.

When Carrie comes home, Max asks how their conversation went. Carrie is unsure when the psychologist will allow her to see Franny again. Meanwhile, Max has found out which building Conlin called Carrie from immediately before his death. With more leads leading to the address of the building, Max decided to apply for a job there. Carrie has second thoughts about his plan, but Max is sure of himself.

Dar is delighted with Keane's change of heart on Iran. Just as he was talking to Majid about it, there was a knock on his door. Dar opens it and lets several of his men into the apartment. Majid realizes that he was tricked by Dar and that he is working with Mossad. He quickly calls Carrie unnoticed, who in turn connects to Saul so the two can overhear Majid and Dar's conversation. Realizing that Majid is in trouble, Saul asks his colleague to trace the call. However, this ends too quickly and his colleague can only find out the approximate location of Majid. However, he is put out of action with a syringe.

The police are trying to get into the lake house. They discover the bullet holes in the door and traces of blood on the floor. Noticing them, Quinn smears blood from Astrid's wound on his lips and then disappears in the car unnoticed while the police look around the house and spot Astrid.

Saul and Carrie have found the hotel where Majid and Dar were just talking. A clue allows Carrie to find Majid's cell phone. Later she shows her find together with Saul Keane. On the phone is a video that Saul believes proves Mossad paid Nafisi to trick Americans into believing Iran was violating the nuclear deal. They also enlighten Keane that Dar has forced Javadi to change his plan and also claim that the Iranians are not honoring the deal. Keane can't believe Dar lied to her about this just hours ago. Carrie also addresses the bomb responsible for Sekou's death and her suspicion that Dar is also to blame. Keane then wants to know how they can get him down. The woman who interviewed Max tells her manager that he is an ideal fit but has been evasive about a year-long gap in his resume. The supervisor then asks Max himself what happened that year, but Max refuses to say it, saying it was something private. When the supervisor asks again, he replies that he has not worked the year because he had recently lost someone who was very important to him and he wished he had died in his place. The supervisor then decides to hire him.

Quinn sets fire to a gun shop owner's car to distract him and then steals a bag full of assorted guns and ammo from the shop. Meanwhile, Carrie meets Keane's attorney, George Pallis, who is taking on Dar Adal's case. However, he is soberingly aware that everything they have on Dar is just conjecture and not evidence that will stand up in court. Therefore, Carrie's testimony is the only way to do something about Dar, since she can report on the security breach in Berlin, in which he was also involved. However, Carrie refuses to testify against Dar alone since Saul was the one who exposed his betrayal. However, George Pallis is certain that Carrie's testimony about Berlin will carry the most weight. Nevertheless, she wants to talk to Saul first.

Max is taken to his new job where he meets a man named Trent. This immediately has a first task for Max. Meanwhile, Carrie meets with Saul to enlighten him about her meeting with Keane. Saul can't believe that Carrie told Keane about the security gap in Berlin and once again makes it clear that he was mainly responsible for it. There is then a tense atmosphere between the two, in which they blame each other [about Nicholas Brody and Allison Carr]. At that moment, Carrie receives a call from Franny's foster home and is told that she can visit her daughter the next day.

Keane awaits Dar for another meeting regarding the contingency plan. She hopes this will help her find out who Dar is working closely with, so she continues to pretend to be his ally. However, as the conversation progresses, Dar realizes something is wrong and pocketed the list of familiar names he originally brought for Keane. When she finally asks for the names, he directs the conversation to her son.

Max has been given the task of rescuing fake social media accounts from his colleagues. Max pulls it off with no problems, and the whole office cheers. Then everyone begins to write articles expressing their solidarity with their homeland, America.

Dar is taken home in a cab and is clearly annoyed by the outcome of the conversation with Keane. He still has the list of the names of his confidants with him. At home, Quinn is waiting for him, who is looking for the man who killed Astrid. He threatens Dar with a gun, confident he sent him. Dar makes it clear to him that he would never hurt Quinn since he has been with him for a long time of his life and loves him. Quinn doesn't have the heart to pull the trigger, but knocks Dar down and then flees. Dar then calls Astrid's killer, who only finds out through the call that Quinn is still alive. He can overhear the conversation from the car. Dar's interlocutor finally hangs up, aware that they are on the open line. But Quinn has already been able to locate him and is following his trail.

Quotes[]

  • “I pushed him toward that ... I really don’t like this.” - Carrie says cryptically before crying
  • “I just spent 90 minutes with a shrink reminding me how I put people in harm’s way without thinking twice” - Carrie
  • “What’s with you people, the intelligence community?”- Keane
  • SAUL: Carrie? I've been going over the Nafisi tape, translating the whole thing.
  • It's true he never mentions Dar directly, it's always Mossad, but there's a lot of indirect reference to American involvement, a lot.
  • You hear anything from Keane?
  • (sighs) Yeah.
  • They, uh-- They brought the Solicitor General onboard.
  • Good.
  • So when do we go in?
  • Actually, I just met with them.
  • You did? What happened, they lose my number?
  • (sighs) No, what happened is The Solicitor General says there's no evidence.
  • (chuckles) That's not true.
  • Not enough to prosecute, according to him.
  • He says that the only way to bring down Dar is by prosecuting the breach in the Berlin station under the Espionage Act.
  • (scoffs) You told them about Berlin? Weeks ago.
  • It was never supposed to be used.
  • It's about the cover-up, Saul, and that's on Dar.
  • He had the obligation to report not only the security breach - Oh, please.
  • - but also leaving agents on the ground after - they had been compromised.
  • - Stop it.
  • Stop it! Who cares about a cover-up? The breach itself is me.
  • I was in the middle of it.
  • I was the one involved with the Russian spy.
  • I know.
  • Everything I've done, my entire career will be wiped out.
  • All anyone will remember is that.
  • Keane is not ungrateful.
  • She promised you a pardon.
  • A pardon.
  • It's not nothing.
  • What about the Agency?
  • (sighs) Well, the Agency has survived worse.
  • Not when the president wants it gone, which Keane does.
  • You're aware of that, right? Don't look away, God damn it.
  • Answer me.
  • Say something.
  • Maybe you shouldn't have been fucking a Russian mole.
  • Well, coming from someone who fucked a guy in a suicide vest, that means a lot.
