The Covenant is the third episode of Season 6 of Homeland. It aired on January 29, 2017.

Synopsis[]

Saul Berenson to Abu Dhabi. Meanwhile, Carrie Mathison has bad news and Peter Quinn has a bad feeling.

Episode guide[]

Quinn has a nightmare in which he hallucinates from his poisoning in the shower. When he starts screaming in his sleep, Carrie rushes over and hugs him, causing him to calm down. However, when he wants to take off her t-shirt, she immediately backs away. She reminds him of Franny and makes it clear that nothing will happen between them. Then Reda calls, who asks her to come to the office immediately. Conlin complained to him about Carrie secretly seeing Saad.

Saul is traveling by taxi in Abu Dhabi. The taxi driver points out that they are being followed, but manages to lose the car behind them at a red light. Saul then gets out and walks through the narrow streets of a market. There he is finally approached by a woman on my scooter who calls him Mr. Greenburg and takes him with her.

Meanwhile, Carrie arrives at the office, where Reda tells her that Sekou's deal is off because of her meeting with Saad. He now has to face a normal court process and thus probably for 15 years in prison. Reda also discovers that Carrie is now beyond her skills and is no longer doing what she was originally hired to do. After the conversation, he wants to go to Sekou to tell him the bad news, but Carrie agrees to do it because it's her fault too.

Under a pretext, a man is lured into an apartment where Saul is already waiting for him. The man's cell phone is taken away, then Saul begins to question him. It is Farhad Nafisi, a member of Iran's Aerospace Applied Sciences Delegation. He is said to be involved in illegal arms deals. Saul makes the man understand what he's going to do if his superiors find out, and then lets him ponder his words. He then talks to Tova about the assumption that Nafisi is involved in the alternative nuclear deal with North Korea. While Tova is certain that Nafisi is working with North Korea based on the evidence, Saul wants solid evidence before he can objectively assess the situation.

Carrie admits to Sekou that the deal fell through because of her meeting with Saad. Sekou replies that he would not have agreed to the deal anyway. It's only when Carrie explains the consequences of the broken deal that Sekou realizes what it means for him and gets angry. Carrie tries to apologize, but Sekou immediately ends the call.

Saul uses Nafisi's cell phone to check his bank balances, noting that he has a $120 million loan from First Emirates Bank. He has used half of the loan within the last week. Saul wants to know what the money is for. Nafisi replies that it is a deposit for Russian anti-aircraft batteries. Saul confronts him with the allegations of violating the nuclear agreement and points out a trip to North Korea for which there are indications but no evidence. Nafisi denies the trip and claims he has never been to North Korea. Saul then lets him go but threatens to report his activities to his superiors if he misbehaves. After Nafisi leaves, Tova asks Saul if he really believed what Nafisi told him. Saul denies and also suspects Iran's cooperation with North Korea.

Quinn is home alone and visibly uncomfortable. He hears something in Carrie's apartment and then goes to the window from where he watches a man entering his house across the street from his direction.

Saul reports to Dar Adal on the phone about the questioning of Nafisi. Dar is less than pleased to hear that Saul was unable to get a confession out of him. Saul breaks off the conversation to shred the documents. He finds Nafisi's pack of cigarettes in the trash can and puts them in his pocket.

Carrie finds an old acquaintance named Roger outside his home and asks him to trace a phone call between Conlin and Saad. However, Roger doesn't want to break the law to help her. Even after she explained that she ruined Sekou's life by making a mistake, he persists. When he leaves her, Carrie calls after him that she will send him the necessary information for the follow-up anyway.

The next day, Saul calls Dar again to let him know that he is staying in the Middle East for a few more days to visit his sister. After their phone call, Dar meets with Keane to tell her that Saul says the evidence is clear that Iran is violating the nuclear deal. Keane then asks what he would do to counteract this, to which Dar replies that he would stop any activity that suits the Iranians.

When Carrie comes back to the office, a large bouquet of flowers awaits her. A USB stick is enclosed, which she immediately connects to her mobile phone. She can then listen to the conversation between Conlin and Saad. Carrie immediately confronts Conlin about this, since Saad refers to Sekou as harmless in the recording. She demands that he drop all charges and release Sekou by the next morning, otherwise she threatens to give the recording of the conversation to the prosecutor.

Saul has arrived at his sister's. They eat together and then look at family photos. She inquires about Mira, whereupon Saul tersely explains that they made promises to each other that they couldn't keep, which is why their relationship ended. They also talk about her late husband, Moshe, who Saul never got along with because they had different views. Moshe got his wife to be proud of her religion, Judaism. In doing so, from Saul's point of view, he turned her against her family, which has always been reticent about their religion because they belonged to the minority in their homeland. He condemns her for her life in the West Bank, but she makes it clear that she is enjoying her life and, unlike his, it is fulfilling.

Quinn meets up with Clarice and tells her he wants to see Tommy again. Clarice reluctantly takes him to his home. Quinn claims he wants to buy Tommy's gun, prompting Tommy to quote a price of $2,000. Since this is exactly the amount of cash Tommy stole from him, Quinn knocks him to the ground, takes his gun and clarifies that they are even now.

Keane meets with Carrie to discuss the nuclear deal findings. Carrie doubts that Saul is so sure of himself and asks Keane to read his written account of the events in Abu Dhabi first. Dar Adal overhears the conversation unnoticed. Saul is looking at the empty pack of cigarettes when he gets a message on his cell phone. He then leaves the house, sneaks through the fence to the Palestinian side and gets into a police car. The passenger orders him to crouch in the back seat so he is not seen. Meanwhile, Carrie comes home and doesn't notice that Quinn is standing in the front yard with his gun and watching the man across the street.

Quotes[]

“What do you want?” - Carrie

"So, that's the two thousand I owe you, less the two thousand you stole from me leaves what? How much I owe you now?"

"You were supposed to secure funding, investigate, advise. What you weren't supposed to do is take matters into your own hands, break the law."

"I think I'll stick with you."

"These are the same tactics you used to counter U.N. sanctions, fund Hezbollah, export your revolution to the rest of the world."

Saul said: “haven’t you driven enough people from there homes?

“Doesn’t that strike you as a form of insanity?” Saul retorts. If that weren’t enough to needle his sister, he adds in the next breath: “How can you live knowing that your very presence here makes peace less possible?”

“What do you want?” - Saul

Carrie blabbers “I’m so, so sorry” and Sekou shoots back “How could you do this to me?”

“When did we start arresting people for crimes they might commit?” Carrie demands. “Somewhere between 9/11 and Orlando,” Conlin fires back.
